Hans Friederiszick

Dr Hans W. Friederiszick is a competition economist with over twenty-five years of experience and a managing director in BRG’s Berlin office. He leads teams of economists in major international antitrust investigations and has extensive experience in merger control, cartel damages litigation, abuse of dominance, State aid, digital markets and the European Union’s Foreign Subsidies Regulation.

Dr. Friederiszick acts as an economic expert before courts and competition authorities and is consistently recognised among the world’s leading competition economists, including as one of Germany’s top competition economists by JUVE. Lexology Index has recognised him as a Global Elite Thought Leader, with clients saying he is “a very seasoned consulting economist” who can “communicate complex economic issues in a way that is both accessible and litigation-focused”. He has supported governments, public authorities and private clients on State aid policy and enforcement.

Dr. Friederiszick has worked on high-profile merger proceedings including Holcim/Lafarge, EDEKA/Kaiser’s Tengelmann and Vodafone/Unitymedia; and more recently Demant/KIND, Zalando/About You, Rolex/Bucherer, EG Group’s acquisition of OMV petrol stations in Southern Germany and Kronospan’s attempted acquisition of Pfleiderer East. He has led cases involving catchment area analyses, including in gasoline, grocery retail and healthcare markets. He has deep expertise in competition issues in rail transportation and an extensive portfolio of clients in the digital sector, including advising Apple in the German Art. 19a proceedings.

Dr. Friederiszick has deep experience in cartel damages litigation and has advised both claimants and defendants in cases involving LIBOR (London Interbank Offered Rate)-related litigation, particleboard, air cargo, payment cards (pass-on of multilateral interchange fees, or MIFs), fast-moving consumer goods and soft timber. He has also advised clients in numerous State aid proceedings.

Dr. Friederiszick was a member of the first chief economist team at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Competition, where he also completed a traineeship at the Merger Task Force.

Dr. Friederiszick is a prolific author and regular speaker at international antitrust conferences. His recent publications include contributions to Nomos’s commentaries on European competition law (2024) and European State aid law (2025) and articles on reverse privatisation in waste collection (Review of Industrial Organization, 2022) and cartel litigation activity (Journal of Antitrust Enforcement, 2021). He has been a research fellow at ESMT Berlin since 2006. He works in German and English.
