Steven Gawthorpe, PhD, is a data scientist with more than ten years of experience. He specializes in open-source intelligence techniques for investigating financial crime and corruption.
His technical expertise includes machine learning (ML) and natural language processing, and he plays a pivotal role in the development of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) solutions at BRG. His work spans a diverse range of AI/ML applications, from information retrieval and named-entity recognition to text generation and computer vision.
Before joining BRG, Dr. Gawthorpe served as the senior data scientist and project lead for the Drugs Monitoring Platform (DMP) at the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crime. In this capacity, he developed an innovative AI solution that continuously extracts global news content related to illicit drug seizures. His contributions to the project were highly valued, and the DMP has had an impact on combating drug trafficking and abuse.
