Lars-Hendrik Röller

Professor Lars-Hendrik Röller is a managing director in BRG’s Berlin office. He advises governments, international organisations and corporations on competition policy, industrial strategy, digital markets, energy and economic regulation, combining economics analysis with strategic advice on complex policy and regulatory issues. He has experience in government, competition enforcement, academia and economic consulting.

Professor Röller served as chief economic advisor to former German Chancellor Angela Merkel. He also acted as Germany’s sherpa for the G7 and G20, preparing and coordinating seventeen international summits including Germany’s G7 presidency in 2015 and G20 presidency in 2017. Since 2022, he has served as an economic advisor to the prime minister of the Republic of Albania.

He was the European Commission’s first chief competition economist at the Directorate-General for Competition (DG Competition), where he advised on Phase II merger investigations, antitrust and State aid cases. He contributed to major policy initiatives including the Horizontal Merger Guidelines, Article 82 discussion paper and introduction of the economic approach to State aid control.

Professor Röller is the founder and chairman of the Berlin Global Dialogue, an international forum on geopolitics bringing together global business leaders and politicians. He is a member of the UN Commission on Geopolitics, Globalization and Development for Latin America and the Caribbean; the board of the Walther Rathenau, Institute Foundation for International Politics; and the Rhine Group, a Swiss nonprofit association to develop concrete solutions to accelerate economic growth, competitiveness and innovation across Europe. He was senior advisor to BlackRock and chairman of BlackRock’s Climate Transition Advisory Council.

He has held senior academic leadership positions including president of the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT), professor at Humboldt University of Berlin, INSEAD and director at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center, Europe’s largest research center in the social sciences.

Professor Röller served as president of the German Economic Association and the European Association for Research in Industrial Economics (EARIE). He is a fellow of the European Economic Association, a distinguished fellow of the Centre for Economic Policy Research (CEPR) and a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities.

Professor Röller holds a PhD and master’s degrees in economics and artificial intelligence from the University of Pennsylvania and a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Texas A&M University.
