Bas Dessens has extensive experience advising clients in cartel damages litigation, merger control, State aid, abuse of dominance and regulatory matters.

Bas Dessens is a director in BRG’s London office with extensive experience in competition economics. His work focuses on damages assessments in cartel and information exchange cases, merger control, State aid, abuse of dominance and regulatory matters. He has particular expertise in damages assessments related to cartel and information exchange cases, including collective actions, and has advised clients in proceedings before the European Commission (EC) and national competition authorities across Europe.

Mr Dessens has worked on cartel and information exchange cases including trucks, smart-card chips and air cargo; on collective actions; and on merger proceedings such as EssilorLuxottica/GrandVision, Holcim/Lafarge and Knauf/Armstrong. He has advised clients in cases before the EC, German Bundeskartellamt, UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets and Belgian Competition Authority.

Mr Dessens’ industry experience spans transportation, lifts, advertising, online platforms, microelectronics, pharmaceuticals, beverage distribution, beer, optical retail, hearing aids, petrol stations, groceries, telecommunications, auditing services, interchange fees, cinemas, car parts, forklift trucks, gas-insulated switchgear, furniture and various commodity industries.

For more than a year, Mr Dessens was seconded to the UK Competition Commission (the predecessor of the CMA) and worked on merger proceedings and a market investigation.

Before joining E.CA Economics, Mr Dessens worked as a consultant for a business consultancy in the Netherlands, focusing on projects in the consumer electronics, chemicals and oil and gas industries.

Mr Dessens holds master’s degrees in business and economics from Tilburg University and Humboldt University of Berlin. He is fluent in Dutch, English, German and Spanish.
