Anselm Mattes

Dr. Anselm Mattes is a managing director in Berlin and has over twenty years of experience in economic consulting focused on competition economics and empirical analysis. He provides economic advice to a wide range of clients, including the European Commission, federal ministries in Germany and many private clients, ranging from startups to global players.

Dr. Mattes advises clients in all fields of competition policy, including mergers, damages quantification in private litigation cases, abuse of dominance, State aid and regulation. In merger control he supports clients at the national and European levels, including feasibility studies during the pre-notification phase. He supports the European Commission in ex post evaluations and impact assessment studies concerning a range of competition policy issues. He also works extensively with both claimants and defendants on damages assessments related to cartel and information exchange cases.

Dr. Mattes’ industry experience covers, among others, trucks, automotive supply, steel, retail, nuclear and renewable energy, power cables, lasers, forestry, music and copyright industries, public broadcasting, tourism, telecommunications and rail freight.

Dr. Mattes holds a doctorate in economics from the University of Tübingen. His academic research focused on international economics and foreign direct investment (FDI). His work has been published in peer-reviewed and policy-oriented journals including the Canadian Journal of Economics, Applied Economics Quarterly, Wirtschaft und Wettbewerb, DIW Weekly Report, Wirtschaftsdienst and ifo Schnelldienst.

Dr. Mattes has been recommended as a Competition Economist in Who’s Who Legal/Lexology Index: Competition since 2024.

Before joining E.CA Economics, Dr. Mattes worked at DIW Econ, the consulting arm of the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW Berlin).

He speaks both German and English.
