Thomas Kiernan

Tom Kiernan is a member of BRG’s Cyber Security and Investigations practice. He previously served more than twenty-three years as a computer scientist at the FBI. While with the FBI, he investigated and provided specialized technical and forensic support to a broad range of criminal, terrorism, and national security matters. They included high-profile investigations such as the billion-dollar online narcotics website Silk Road, the Anonymous/LulzSec hacktivist groups, Operation Dirty R.A.T. (targeting the creators and users of Black Shades spyware), the hacks of Citibank and PNC Bank, Operation Cardshop (the largest ever online undercover operation targeting identity thieves), Operation Ghost Click/Rove Digital (a multimillion-computer botnet), and the hack of JPMorgan Chase Bank. He also testified at the federal criminal trial of Ross Ulbricht, the owner and operator of Silk Road. In addition, he has produced technical reports on malware reverse engineering and network exploitation.

Mr. Kiernan also has extensive technical knowledge and training. He is a Certified Forensic Computer Examiner (CFCE) and a member of the International Association of Computer Investigative Specialists (IACIS).

Mr. Kiernan is a recipient of both the US Attorney General’s Award for Outstanding Cyber Investigation and the FBI Director’s Award for Outstanding Cyber Investigation.

Since leaving government service, Mr. Kiernan has worked with clients in a range of industries, including technology, social media, government, financial, retail, and education.
