Lawrence Futa heads BRG’s Tokyo office and is a Director in the firm’s Global Investigations + Strategic Intelligence practice. He previously served as a career Federal Bureau of Investigation Special Agent, as well as a consultant to the FBI on asset forfeiture matters.
Mr. Futa specializes in conducting corporate investigations regarding internal malfeasance, whistleblower complaints, potential corruption, fraud, and money laundering. He also supports clients in their global strategic business intelligence and due diligence needs.
Mr. Futa spent over 24 years with the FBI as a Special Agent, where he specialized in the Asia-Pacific region. He was appointed by the FBI Director to lead the Bureau’s offices in Tokyo and later Hong Kong. He was responsible for the FBI’s most sensitive investigations in Japan, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, and he worked in close partnership with regional law enforcement and intelligence agencies. He led the FBI’s international efforts targeting corruption and FCPA violations, terrorism and national security matters, intellectual property rights violations, cyber fraud, organized crime, and money laundering. He was the first supervisor of the FBI’s Cyber Squad in Honolulu and was recognized by the FBI and the US Attorney’s Office for his leadership and initiative in protecting national cyber infrastructure and intellectual property rights, and targeting cyber fraud threats and online threats against children. He successfully led high-profile investigations targeting government corruption in Hawaii.
Mr. Futa also led an Organized Crime Squad in San Francisco that used sophisticated human source and undercover operations to bring down Asian and Eurasian organized crime groups and expose government corruption. He served as a consultant to the FBI on asset forfeiture matters, and he previously worked for a global financial institution and a global accounting and consulting firm.
Mr. Futa was awarded a medal of Investigative Excellence by the FBI and a commendation from the US intelligence community for his work overseas. He also received the Hawai'i's Top 50 High Tech Leaders Award.
