Jon Berkoe is a leading expert in the application of emerging technology in the construction industry. He provides a solutions-oriented approach that has consistently resulted in real and tangible improvements in the use of construction technology in both engineering and construction roles, working for owners, builders, software companies, and other major stakeholders in the construction life cycle.
Mr. Berkoe started his career at General Electric and Lockheed, and then worked for Bechtel Corporation for over twenty-five years, managing several strategic technology initiatives. He was recognized by in 2010 as one of the initial five Distinguished Engineers selected globally for his role in pioneering the use of advanced simulation and high-end computing. He was directly involved in projects including major liquefied natural gas (LNG) plants and petroleum refineries, aluminum processing plants, copper concentrator plants, the US Department of Energy Waste Treatment Plant, two US Department of Defense chemical weapons sites, fossil and renewable power plants, international airports, and the Tacoma Narrows Bridge expansion. He has presented and published his work in a wide range of industry forums on many of these projects.
In 2011, Mr. Berkoe assumed a leadership role in a new Bechtel corporate initiative focused toward the development and execution of strategic pilot projects and roadmaps for enabling cross-functional implementation of virtual design and construction tools and practices for the advancement of building information modeling (BIM) across the enterprise. This work contributed to the formation of Bechtel’s practice group in construction innovation known at the Virtual Project Delivery team.
In 2014, Mr. Berkoe became a global director for a UK-based software company, focused on advancing the practice of modern digital construction and project planning, and working with leading builders around the world in the development of 4D scheduling and related project planning. He was directly involved in projects including the Battersea Power Station Redevelopment (London), Hinkley Point Nuclear Power Station (UK), Los Angeles Airport Expansion, Corpus Christi LNG Tanks, and Crossrail Underground Rail Expansion (London).
Mr. Berkoe focuses on enabling commercial and government owners, contractors, architect/engineering firms, and major trade contractors on complex projects by analyzing and determining proper means and methods to obtain maximum value from currently available construction technology, such as 4D and 5D planning, and minimizing the risk of deploying and implementing new technology. He assists clients by implementing initial protocols and continuous improvement for the proper development of BIM and its integration with the project schedule (4D) for project design and construction, starting from the schematic level to more detail as design and planning are further developed, resulting in improved cost, time, and reliability of project delivery.
