Jared Der-Yeghiayan

Jared Der-Yeghiayan is a director in BRG’s Cyber Operations and Incident Response practice. He specializes in domestic and international investigations related to cybercrime, theft of intellectual property, darknet markets, narcotics trafficking, money laundering, and cryptocurrencies. He has testified in both state and federal courts on cyber-related matters.

Mr. Der-Yeghiayan gained over sixteen years of high-profile federal law enforcement experience with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). He served over nine years as a special agent with Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), where he led a wide variety of investigations into cyber, financial, narcotics, and weapons trafficking crimes. His successful investigation of cyber-crimes resulted in being awarded the prestigious US Attorney General’s Distinguished Service Award.

In 2011, as a special agent assigned to HSI’s Chicago field office, Mr. Der-Yeghiayan initiated a criminal investigation focused on the illicit darknet drug marketplace known as Silk Road. He worked extensively undercover to infiltrate the criminal organization as an administrator, resulting in the seizure of the website, over $80 million worth of criminal proceeds, and prosecution of those responsible for its operation.

Mr. Der-Yeghiayan continued his undercover work as he led the investigation into the successor website “Silk Road 2.0.” In 2014, while serving as a US liaison to the Europol Cybercrime Centre, he orchestrated Operation Onymous—a worldwide law enforcement shutdown of Silk Road 2.0 and other illicit darknet marketplaces. This global operation resulted in millions of dollars in criminal proceeds seized and multiple arrests.

In 2016, Mr. Der-Yeghiayan was the lead case agent on a complex cyber investigation of the billion-dollar criminal website known as “Kickasstorrents.” Within one year, his investigation identified the website’s shutdown and arrest of the owner and operator. At the time of its shutdown, this global criminal enterprise was ranked as one of the largest websites in the world by traffic volume. Mr. Der-Yeghiayan was later appointed as the law enforcement cyber liaison to the DHS Office of Cyber, Infrastructure and Resilience Policy, working to shape and advance government cyber policies. Most recently, he led efforts to develop and advance cyber-technical investigative capabilities, policies, and training programs at HSI Headquarters’ Cyber Crime Center.
