Daniel Muthmann, a managing director in BRG’s Energy & Climate practice, has twenty-five years of international experience in the energy industry.

He advises energy industry, energy-intensive industry, financial-sector, and government clients in strategic business planning, business models, energy procurement strategy, energy transition strategy, hydrogen and CO2 infrastructure and value chains, natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG), commercial strategy, commercial negotiation, economic and market analysis, valuation, project development, and international cooperation, in particular concerning the development and coordination of new value chains for green molecules internationally (blue and green hydrogen, ammonia, methanol).

He also provides energy industry and quantum expert analysis and testimony for international energy arbitration and litigation matters for law firms and energy industry clients.

Mr. Muthmann previously worked in corporate roles in leading energy companies along natural gas and LNG value chains, starting from gas sales, gas trading, international gas supply, and import contracts to LNG trading, long-term international LNG supplies, and business development. In these roles, he has, for example, been commercially responsible for a contract portfolio of up to 20 bcm/a of long-term import contracts; and negotiated and concluded numerous short- and medium-term sales and purchase agreements (SPAs) in gas and LNG and commercial optimization deals under long-term gas supply agreements. He has also renegotiated contract prices in the context of price-reviews under over a dozen long-term gas supply contracts (including a 15 bcm/a contract between a Norwegian seller and a German buyer). He was the founder and managing director of advisory boutique global gas partners, in which he served international clients in the context of advisory projects and as expert and witness in over fifteen arbitration cases concerning price reviews, commercial disputes, and investment treaty cases.

In his most recent position before joining BRG, Mr. Muthmann developed and implemented a new corporate vision and strategy for a leading European gas infrastructure player in the future decarbonized energy system. He was personally involved in developing several large-scale hydrogen projects (both blue and green hydrogen, including important projects of common European interest (IPCEIs) and PCIs) and took a leading role in coordinating stakeholders and project partners along value chains, inter alia via several mandates in project steering committees. He also was the founding sponsor of a hydrogen consultancy, for which he sat on the advisory board and chaired the board.

Mr. Muthmann is the initiator and was the first chairman of the European Hydrogen Backbone Initiative in Brussels. As such, he built strong ties and an efficient cooperation between thirty-one leading European gas transmission system operators (TSOs) in the field of hydrogen infrastructure and technical and commercial repurposing of pipelines. The work of the initiative was instrumental both in moving the European energy policy agenda on hydrogen and creating confidence in the entire future hydrogen industry concerning the capabilities of the existing gas infrastructure to enable a fast scale-up of hydrogen.

Mr. Muthmann is a native German speaker and fluent in English and Norwegian. He has studied in Norway and maintains deep business relations throughout the Scandinavian energy sector.

Throughout his career, Mr. Muthmann has engaged with high-level political leaders and governmental representatives in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. Overall, his professional experience spans over twenty-five countries throughout Western Europe, Eastern Europe, Eurasia, the Middle East, Africa, and Asia in which he has either lived or worked. More specifically, he has dedicated experience with energy players in the United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Benelux, Germany, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovenia, France, Spain, Italy, Ukraine, Russia, Azerbaijan, Turkey, Algeria, Egypt, Israel, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Equatorial Guinea, Nigeria, Angola, and Japan.

With his profound understanding of and experience in international energy markets, Mr. Muthmann is a recognized thought leader and strategic and commercial European energy expert.
