What Type of Power Generation Provides UK Electricity Imports?
The UK recently achieved several record runs of hours without relying on power generation from coal-fired domestic power stations. Given the contribution that growing wind power made to this, it is clearly significant progress; however, the UK is still importing electricity from continental Europe with no control over the fuels used to produce it. The continental power system is complex, with a mix of types of generation across imperfectly connected markets. Electricity is not labelled, so there is no way of linking specific power plant output with UK imports. But is there some way of understanding what continental power generation is associated with UK imports? One way of looking at the effect of UK electricity imports is to consider what continental power generation might be reduced if the UK was not importing.
