Ben Fouracre with Odilia Man
Earlier this year, the Supreme Leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong-un detailed in his annual plenum report his vision and policies for 2020, vowing to lead the country in a “new way” and pledging to “break through the barriers” In particular, Kim Jong-un outlined that the DPRK will focus on self-reliance and continued strengthening of its military capabilities, and declared an end to the country’s self-imposed moratorium on the testing of nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missiles, which was introduced after his meeting with US President Donald Trump. Kim Jong-un also stated the country’s intention to develop a “new strategic weapon”. At the same time, he did not rule out the possibility of more talks with the US in the coming year.
