Cracking the Code – Managing Fashion Apparel In-Stocks

Retailers have felt the rising impact of online shopping generally and of Amazon in particular, and have witnessed a dramatic evolution of consumer buying patterns. The effect on retailers has been profound—particularly in the fashion apparel industry, where retailers have little margin for error in satisfying customers when they decide to shop in physical store location(s). Consumers appreciate the in-store experience for the chance it affords to touch and feel products. But when a fashion apparel retailer is out of stock—especially when it comes to fashion basics or key seasonal items—shoppers will turn quickly to another store or go online. The result? A lost sale and, worse, perhaps a lost customer.
