Southern Nears Reactor Approvals

February 9, 2012

Rick Fultineer, leader of the BRG Construction practice, comments on the current state of nuclear plant construction. The article discusses federal regulators’ expected approval for Southern Co. to build two nuclear reactors in Georgia, the first approval of a new U.S. nuclear project in more than 30 years. Scana Corp. is next in line to receive NRC licenses to build the same type of reactors in South Carolina. After the two Scana units are completed, “It’s questionable whether other units will follow, at least in the near future, because of the capital costs and the low price of natural gas,” said Mr. Fultineer.
